These are bee hummingbirds that can be found along the West Coast of the U.S. including Alaska during the summer months. The bee hummingbird, smaller, in size and lacking color resides in Cuba.
This graceful bird is an example of natures wonders. It's as tiny as a bee measuring 5 6 cm in length and weighing under 2g.
Their shimmering iridescent feathers, typical of all hummingbirds set them apart from bees. Their flight resembles that of a diamond.
Mesmerizing creatures; if you ever have the opportunity to see them don't miss out.
During the breeding season starting in March male birds sport bodies with red necks while females display blue plumage with a black underbelly and neck.
Males radiate a /red hue from head to throat as they engage in singing and aerial displays to attract their female counterparts.
They lay eggs about the size of a coffee bean, an inch long! However due, to their plumage the mother bird prevents the father from approaching the eggs to avoid attracting predators.
Bee hummingbirds like hummingbirds mainly feed on nectar. They also snack on insects. Spiders occasionally.
It is said that hummingbirds visit about 1,500 flowers every day playing a role, in ecosystem health by aiding in plant reproduction.
Interestingly these tiny creatures do not migrate from their homeland of Cuba. Seem to enjoy the climate there.
The bee hummingbird is currently classified as threatened due to a decline in its population. Its disheartening to see such a bird, at risk; lets join hands to safeguard the environment for these beings!
