Before landing the part that would define his breakout, the Brooklyn-born actor was immersed in theater, supporting himself through a string of eclectic jobs. He worked as a nightclub bouncer, a flower delivery man, a drapery hanger, and a cab driver. At one point, he even served as a personal bodyguard for celebrities such as Yul Brynner and Robert Plant. It wasn’t until his friend and fellow actor Matthew Modine encouraged him to send an audition tape to Kubrick that his trajectory shifted forever.
