A heartwarming reunion unfolded this week when Coast Guard airmen successfully rescued a dog that had fallen from a cliff. The incident took place at Ecola State Park on the Oregon coast on New Years Day. Leo, a 3 year canine accidentally slipped away, from his owners during their walk. Plummeted down a 300 foot seaside cliff.
Local firefighters from three departments were already present preparing to descend the cliff using rappelling techniques when the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria team arrived in an MH 60 Jayhawk helicopter. With the rising tides adding urgency to the situation the rescue crew promptly sprung into action to save Leos life.
Using a hoisting basket they carefully lowered a swimmer onto the beach who managed to reach Leo and secure him in the basket. The entire heart stopping rescue operation was captured on video as Leo was lifted into the helicopter and safely transported back, to mainland.
Undoubtedly it was quite a way to start off the year and you can hear one of the airmen expressing relief and joy in accomplishing their mission by saying, "Hugs all around... Love it " as shown in footage of the rescue.
Leo made it through the ordeal. Fortunately he emerged with minimal injuries. His family was overjoyed to be reunited with him.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest Leos owners stated, "Leo had to spend the night at an emergency clinic. He has a cuts and bruises. Overall he is doing well. We are incredibly grateful that he is alive and expected to make a recovery."
