Mountain Gorilla Who Starred In Viral Selfie, Dies In The Arms Of Caretaker At Age Of 14

A beloved mountain gorilla called Ndakasi has passed away at Africa's oldest national park, Virunga, at the age of 14 after a long sickness.

The adorable animal, who is known for posing with rangers for a relaxed selfie, died in the arms of Andre Bauma, one of the rangers, at a gorilla orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ndakasi, who was rescued when she was 2 months old in 2007, was still clinging to her dead mama, who was killed by some poachers, when she was found.

The rangers decided to raise the baby gorilla at the orphanage as it was not safe to let her back into the wild as she had no relatives.

Ndakasi went viral for the first time in 2019 when another ranger took a selfie with her and Ndeze, another female mountain gorilla.

Mr. Bauma, the manager of the orphanage, said that he treated Ndakasi and loved her as if he were her mother as they fed her, played with her, and shared the same bed with her. Mr. Bauma also added that Ndakasi’s death was one of the hardest moments in his life! How heartbreaking!
